Overview of the Project and Volume - Jean Lau Chin
As the US population is becoming increasingly diverse through rapidly changing demographics, individuals and organizations are beginning to define the cultural competence needed to address this diversity. As feminists, this is consistent with our principle of inclusion. We want to end the silence and hear all voices. However, rather than looking at how women can get an equal seat at the table, we choose to look at how women lead. There is much to suggest that feminist leadership styles are different and more collaborative. Moreover, diverse racial/ethnic groups contribute differing dimensions to leadership and collaboration. The intersection of identities across race, ethnicity, gender, class, and profession contribute to the ways in which feminist leadership and collaboration occurs.
As part of Jean Lau Chin's presidential initiative for Division 35, this E-publication is devoted to Feminist Visions and Diverse Voices: Leadership and Collaboration. We bring together teams of feminist psychologists to dialogue on:
Collaboration as a feminist process that will influence leadership and feminist agendas to be inclusive and diverse
Diversity of theoretical and ethnic perspectives of feminism, and the intersection of these identities in models of feminist leadership
This initiative builds on Norine Johnson's initiative that resulted in the book Shaping the Future of Feminist Psychology some ten years ago. We now add telecommunication technologies to convene, dialogue and publish on feminist leadership and diversity. Invited dialogue of feminist voices on 15 different topics by teams of feminist psychologists discussing diversity, collaboration and leadership will be convened through an Internet-based website. An introduction article for each topic, written by team leaders will kick-off each discussion. All discussion forums will be public and available to all Division 35 members. These discussion forums, moderated by the team leaders, will serve to develop, expand, and refine the issues under each topic. A teleconference will be held for each discussion forum to synthesize issues for a chapter on its topic for a traditional book. The goal of each discussion is not to come to consensus, but rather to respect the differences and the diversity of viewpoints, models, and perspectives for each topic.
As Surgeon General David Satcher stated in his Disparities in Mental Health Report, we must analyze the present toward developing a vision for the future. This includes looking at the influence of race/culture, gender, and class on health, and mental health. It is our hope that this dialogue will enable Division 35 to review and revisit our strategic agenda to promote diversity and feminist leadership. This E-publication will build on the work of feminism and diversity to promote feminist policy, leadership, and collaboration within the field. It will use technology for communication, collaboration and inclusiveness for feminism within a global economy. It will draw on diverse voices and perspectives to answer the questions of: How do we use what we know and do it well? What do we want to achieve? What do we need to learn?
